Tyrone “Pie” Stevenson, the Big Chief of Monogram Hunters, started masking at age 12 with Yellow Pocahontas under Big Chief Tootie. He masked with Yellow Pocahontas for 23 years, then with Tootie’s blessing became Big Chief of Monogram Hunters in 1992. In the 2000’s, he stepped away from masking, concerned that the culture had gotten away from the traditions. He spent 5 years with The Porch program teaching sewing and Indian history to kids after school. Pie realized the importance of teaching the Indian traditions to the next generation.

2025 marks 46 years of Tyrone “Pie” Stevenson masking and preserving the Black Indian culture. The Monogram Hunters embarked on their first Pow Wow Festival in 2024 and will continue to develop this project, inviting tribes from across the country. Big Chief Pie and the Monogram Hunters have been featured across the country at festivals, museums, and art galleries.

Known for his unwavering commitment to preserving and revitalizing traditional Mardi Gras Indian culture, Chief Stevenson has dedicated his life to the art of masking, beadwork, and storytelling. As a respected leader and mentor, he has inspired countless individuals to embrace their cultural heritage and participate in the vibrant traditions of the Mardi Gras Indian tradition. With his intricate suits and captivating performances, Chief Stevenson continues to captivate audiences and uphold the spirit of resilience, creativity, and community that defines the Black Masking Indian tradition.
