Amanda Bertana, PhD is an Assistant Professor in Sociology and Environmental Studies. Her research explores the political economy of environmental degradation, environmental justice, and climate change adaptation. During her residency, she will be working on refining her manuscript, Coastal Futures: Managing Adaptation in a Changing Climate. Coastal Futures examines how climate change adaptation often replicates traditional approaches to capitalist development. From an overreliance on technological solutions, the depoliticization of structural drivers of climatic impacts, to hierarchical value structures that are largely divorced from people’s experiences and worldviews; adaptation has become nothing more than development with a splash of green. Dr. Bertana emphasizes that adaptation must be fundamentally reimagined through adaptation justice. From this perspective, justice in adaptation planning in not an afterthought, but its central guiding principle. This requires bringing to the surface the inherently political nature of climate change adaptation to elucidate the paradigms that are currently guiding adaptation planning.
