2026 – 2027 Artist and Scholar Residencies and Updates
April 2, 2026
Fall 2026 marks the 25th anniversary of A Studio in the Woods. In honor of a quarter century of supporting artists and scholars to vision and dream, we are using this opportunity to reconnect with our former residents to help shape the upcoming year of residencies. Read below for the ways this impacts upcoming programming.
OPEN CALLS
ByWater Scholarly Retreats
Apply here by May 1.
These are one-week residencies awarded to scholars across Tulane University. The ByWater Institute and A Studio in the Woods seek to enhance and support the scholarship, creativity, and cross-disciplinary activity of Tulane faculty and trainees using the lens of any field or discipline to examine environmental challenges, issues, or questions. The ByWater Scholarly Retreats are an open call and awarded by a jury of peers.
Note: Xavier University and the Tulane School of Liberal Arts also hold open calls for their faculty. Contact those administrations for more details if you believe you are eligible for one of these.
New Environmental Residency
In deep consultation with a cross section of former residents from across the globe and a quarter century of our programs, we are in the process of developing a new open call for our thematic project based residencies that centers our mission to foster creative responses to the challenges of our time.
Stay tuned for the launch later this season!
BY INVITATION ONLY
Replenish Residencies
Since 2020 these residencies have provided restorative visioning retreats to South Louisiana artists and culture bearers who have not received a residency before. Historically one to two week residencies, this year artists can choose to be in residence up to three weeks. This year, former residents of the program will nominate applicants who will be selected by an external jury.
Bulbancha Residencies
Since 2022, these residencies have supported artists with a deep connection to the Indigenous cultures of Louisiana and Bulbancha. Artists can choose to be in residence for up to three weeks. This year, former residents of the program will nominate applicants who will be selected by an external jury.
