The New Orleans Futurism Lab: Writing Climate Futures
Saturday, April 9, 10am – 12pm on Zoom. Registration required below.

Join Gulf South Writer in the Woods Desiree S. Evans for Writing Climate Futures, a collaborative world-building and creative writing workshop where participants will learn about speculative fiction specifically as it relates to climate change fiction. In Part 1 of the workshop, participants will collectively imagine and build a future world together — we will envision New Orleans 200 years into the future, with a specific focus on the city’s climate future. In Part 2 of the workshop, we will have time to write individual futurist stories into this collaborative universe. We will then gather at the end to share, interweaving our visions, fears, and hopes for the future into this collaborative act of speculative fiction-making.

As we struggle to define our changing city, our relationship to the land and each other provides a foundation for community building and a chance to envision solutions to our greatest climate crises. This is the power of speculative fiction visioning, allowing us to creatively come up with a world in which to explore important issues. Inspired by the Detroit Sci-Fi Generator, this workshop is an opportunity to imagine alternative climate futures for our city.

Gulf South Writer in the Woods, a program of A Studio in the Woods and the New Orleans Center for the Gulf South, supports the creative work, scholarship and community engagement of writers examining the Gulf South region.
