Aaron Collier is a visual artist and educator living and working in New Orleans. The central question that drives his production and research involves what to make of a vast, complex, and multivalent world with incomplete and finite knowledge. How are images, which are inherently shards or snippets of information, able to picture this inability to know in full? Architectural ruins are sites where knowledge is pieced together through remaining or available fragments; picturing such offers opportunity to consider this way of knowing more intimately. While in residence at A Studio in the Woods, Aaron will be working on eight drawings based on observed ruins at Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli, Italy. These drawings intend to give rise to the vast, unseen, and unrecorded presences of body and labor that constructed, maintained, and inhabited the Villa.
