Grace McIntyre-Willis is an interdisciplinary artist studying in the MFA Digital Arts program at Tulane University and manager for Tulane’s Digital Ceramics lab. Their practice currently utilizes 3D ceramic printing, biological systems, and 2D design to explore morphology, existentialism, and non-human intelligence in the form of sculptural and illustrative works. Calling upon the visual references of organic form, they hope the work will encourage the viewer to point inquiries back at the universe. During their stay at A Studio in the Woods, they will be creating site-specific 3D-printed ceramic sculptures as a further exploration of their body of work, Digital Specimens. This ongoing project explores morphology and ecological symbiosis as a way of visualizing the interconnectivity between all life on Earth. Grace will be reflecting on the biodiversity of the area by employing the use of photogrammetry and structured light 3D scanning techniques to capture life forms and hybridize them digitally to create sculptural works. The ceramic forms will be installed in the surrounding ecosystem to become integrated with microorganisms, plant life, and invertebrates. In addition, these 3D models will be uploaded online for public access and to be shared as a library with ecologists studying similar ecosystems in the area.
