SUMMARY:Deadline to Apply - FATHOM: Volume I\, Lead Residency
DESCRIPTION:A Studio in the Woods envisions an open call to select a local artist to work with Tulane biologists to raise awareness about lead contamination in New Orleans with themes related to both public health and the wellbeing of all living creatures. As in many older cities around the world\, lead contamination represents an important health risk to both human and animal inhabitants of New Orleans. Ongoing work by Dr. Jordan Karubian and colleagues suggests that high levels of lead in some New Orleans neighborhoods may impact the behavior and reproductive success of urban songbirds. In this way\, these songbirds may serve as “canaries in the coal mine” for the risks associated with lead contamination\, with the potential to raise awareness about this important but sometimes under-appreciated issue. \nThe artist will collaborate closely with scientists from Karubian Lab and staff at A Studio in the Woods to understand the effects of lead and develop provocative community engagement using the shared platform of Mardi Gras as a vehicle to reach a broad swath of local residents. The program period will be September 2019-April 2020\, and the artist should plan to be in residence at A Studio in the Woods for three weeks during this time. FATHOM: Volume I\, Lead is a pilot effort between A Studio in the Woods\, Karubian Lab\, and ByWater Institute to support and examine the real-world impact of art/science collaborations. If successful\, this project has the potential to extend an additional year. ByWater Institute researchers will study the collaborative process between the artist and scientists through interviews and observations\, and will evaluate the project’s impact on participants through surveys. \nAPPLY HERE

DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to meet A Studio in the Woods’ newest resident artist\, Regina Agu. In residence through a collaboration with New Orleans Museum of Art\, Agu will create an installation for NOMA’s Great Hall to be displayed in conjunction with their upcoming exhibition\, Inventing Acadia: Painting and Place in Louisiana. Agu is working closely with Studio botanist David Baker as she explores and investigates the Louisiana landscape. Please note that parking is limited\, save on gas and carpool with a friend! \nRegina Agu’s recent work investigates the complex relationships between the landscape and communities of color\, with a special focus on the U.S. Gulf Coast region. Her work is conceptually oriented towards language\, history\, and representation. Agu’s practice employs a variety of tactics and theories drawn from black geographies\, critical geography\, conceptual writing\, and poetry. Her research often involves site exploration and working with and through archives. Agu produces texts\, photographs\, and drawings\, in addition to installations\, performances\, and collaborative public projectsps. \nHer work has been included in exhibitions\, public readings\, and performances nationally. In 2018\, Agu was a Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts + Project Row Houses fellow at the University of Houston\, a Lawndale Artist Studio Program resident\, and was awarded a residency at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans through a partnership with For Freedoms. Agu received a 2017 Artadia Houston award and was a 2016-2017 Open Sessions participant at The Drawing Center. Agu was the co-director of Alabama Song\, a collaboratively-run art space in Third Ward\, Houston\, which received a 2016 SEED grant from The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. DESCRIPTION:Join us at New Orleans Museum of Art to celebrate the public opening of Regina Agu’s installation “Passsage.” At 7:30 PM\, the artist will give a Gallery Talk in the Great Hall. \nABOUT PASSAGE\n“Passage” is an immersive\, site-specific installation created for the New Orleans Museum of Art by contemporary artist Regina Agu and marks her first solo museum show. Inspired by the historical form of the panorama\, Agu’s 100-foot-long installation weaves together imagery of waterways from across Louisiana to consider how the landscapes\, people\, and histories of the region are connected by and through water. Agu’s project mines histories of landscape painting to explore the unique social and political geographies of the Gulf Coast. This installation was created in partnership with A Studio in the Woods\, through an artist residency.

SUMMARY:Artist Salon with Ladee Hubbard
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, December 9\, 2019\, 6:30pm at A Studio in the Woods\, join us for a potluck and to learn more about author Ladee Hubbard. \nLadee Hubbard is the second Gulf South Writer in the Woods\, an appointment spanning 18 months in 2019 and 2020 which includes a total of six weeks in residence at A Studio in the Woods\, public engagement programming\, and research support. During the residency\, Hubbard will be revising her novel\, The Rib King. Spanning a ten-year period between 1917 and 1927\, The Rib King shares its name with a fictitious brand of barbecue sauce that August Sitwell\, an African-American groundskeeper\, creates with the help of a cook\, Mamie Clark. The sauce receives national distribution and is sold with a caricature of August on the label. The Rib King draws upon the author’s interest in the popularity of minstrelsy and the devastating impact it had on African-Americans’ efforts to assert their rights as citizens during the first decades of the 20th century. In chronicling the path through which August Sitwell’s distorted image becomes an emblem of quality\, reliability\, and modern convenience the novel explores the nostalgia for slavery that was so vividly dramatized through the use of African-Americans to sell consumer items\, particularly culinary products\, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. \nLadee Hubbard is the author of the novel The Talented Ribkins which received the Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence and the Hurston-Wright Legacy Award for Debut Fiction. She received a BA from Princeton University\, a MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Wisconsin\, Madison and a PhD from the University of California\, Los Angeles. Her short fiction has appeared in Virginia Quarterly Review\, Callaloo and Guernica\, among other venues. Her film and book reviews appear in The Times Literary Supplement. She is a recipient of a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Award and has received additional fellowships and grants from the Sustainable Arts Foundation\, MacDowell Colony and Sewanee Writers Conference among others. DESCRIPTION:Adaptations Resident Hannah Pepper-Cunningham and local artist Ron Ragin have been investigating material for their first solo performances and will share their findings at ONESIE — a duet of solos on December 14 at 7:30pm or December 15 at 2:00pm at Catapult\, 609 St. Ferdinand\, presented by Mondo Bizarro\, and supported through a grant from the New Orleans Theater Association. \nCarbon\, Capture by Hannah Pepper-Cunnigham. Not every solution to climate change is a good one. This performance was made possible by an Adaptations residency at A Studio in the Woods. \n[    ] by Ron Ragin. As my father was dying\, he asked me to hold his hand for the first time. Oh? Oh … What did my family teach me about how to touch other Black men? I am digging with my fingers to remember. This performance was made possible with an Artist Studio residency at Double Edge Theatre. \nPlease RSVP using this form \nSeating is very limited. Tickets are $10-$20 sliding scale (but no one turned away for lack of funds)\, and you can pay for them the night of the show. Cash is preferred. \nCatapult is not climate controlled\, so will be as cold or colder than outside temps. Please note that parking is limited\, save on gas and carpool with a friend! \n\nWhile in residence\, Nick will embark on “Invisible Rivers\,” a series of performances and public walks that seek to re-engage citizens with the wisdom of adaptation and uncertainty inherent in the once wild paths of the Mississippi River.  “Invisible Rivers” unites the power of art\, the strategies of cultural organizing\, and the wisdom of ancestry to investigate how the structures of control it takes to levee a river have shown up in the interior landscapes of the people\, protecting us from a most necessary tool of adaptation: grief. \nNick Slie is a New Orleans-born performer\, producer and cultural organizer. He is the Co-Artistic Director of Mondo Bizarro and an Associate Professor of Theater at Nunez Community College. Nick’s creative endeavors range from interdisciplinary solo performances to large-scale community festivals\, from innovative digital storytelling projects to site-responsive productions. For more than a decade\, he has been passionately engaged in rebuilding his hometown of New Orleans\, collaborating across sectors on a vast array of local performance and arts-based civic engagement projects. Since 2002\, Nick has toured a wide array of imaginative projects to art centers\, universities and outdoor locations in 38 states across the country and abroad. However\, he is most proud of the work he does in Southeast Louisiana\, where the land kisses the water.

DESCRIPTION:Recycle your beads with the Mockingbird Project! Artist Pippin Frisbie-Calder\, scientists from Karubian Lab\, and community volunteers will be out on the Uptown parade route (St. Charles between Napoleon and Louisiana) to recycle Mardi Gras Beads and raise awareness about lead contamination in the city. Bring us your beads and we will exchange them for a hand-made throw and recycle them. Saturday\, January 15\, 1:30pm – 5:30pm. \nA Studio in the Woods is working in collaboration with Tulane biologists Dr. Jordan Karubian and PhD student Annelise Blanchette to host an artist residency for printmaker Pippin Frisbie-Calder to raise awareness about urban birds and lead contamination in New Orleans with themes related to both public health and the well being of all living creatures. As in many older cities around the world\, lead contamination represents an important health risk to both human and animal inhabitants of New Orleans. Ongoing work by Dr. Jordan Karubian and colleagues suggests that high levels of lead in some New Orleans neighborhoods may impact the behavior and reproductive success of urban songbirds. In this way\, these songbirds may serve as “canaries in the coal mine” for the risks associated with lead contamination\, with the potential to raise awareness about this important but sometimes under-appreciated issue. The artist will collaborate closely with scientists from Karubian Lab and staff at A Studio in the Woods to understand the effects of lead and develop provocative community engagement using the shared platform of Mardi Gras as a vehicle to reach a broad swath of local residents. \nA key component to this project will be getting toxic beads out of the trash and into recycling programs. In addition to high levels of lead in New Orleans from historic contamination\, Mardi Gras beads have been shown to have high levels of heavy metals. Objects tossed off of Mardi Gras parade floats\, called ‘throws’ locally\, comprise approximately 25 million pounds of trash produced annually during the two week celebration. Our intention is to incentivize people to recycle their beads by exchanging them for a beautiful\, eco-friendly\, handcrafted throw. Darensbourg is an enrolled member and tribal councilperson of the Atakapa-Ishak Nation of mixed Native and Louisiana Creole ancestry. He was a 2018-2019 Monroe Fellow of the New Orleans Center for the Gulf South at Tulane University. His work explores the intersections of cultural studies\, mixed ethnicity\, and Indigeneity. Jeffery grew up in Baton Rouge\, earned his Ph.D. from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette\, and currently lives near Bayou Choupic (what white colonists attempted to rename as “Bayou St. John”) in Bulbancha (what white colonists attempted to rename as “New Orleans”). He is a founding coeditor of the zine Bulbancha Is Still a Place: Indigenous Culture from New Orleans.

DESCRIPTION:Dear friends\, in response to the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic\, specifically to an increased number of cases in the New Orleans metro area\, and in accordance with Tulane’s recommendations\, we have decided to postpone the Writer’s Cabin dedication in line with physical distancing protocols. Staff will be convening to determine appropriate adaptations of our other scheduled programming this coming week. Thank you for your understanding and take care\, The Staff of A Studio in the Woods. \n— \nWednesday\, March 18 at 9:30am\, A Studio in the Woods will dedicate its new Writer’s Cabin with a celebration featuring remarks and performances by Cheryl Landrieu\, Mark Davis\, Rebecca Snedeker\, Monique Verdin\, Benjamin Morris\, and Dr. Michael White. Attendees at the dedication will have the opportunity to view the new space and participate in a tour of the grounds with A Studio in the Woods Environmental Curator David Baker or a tour of the facility and program with Managing Director Ama Rogan. \nThis new live/work space for literary artists is the fifth structure on the Studio’s 7.66 acres of protected bottomland hardwood forest. The addition of the Cabin deepens A Studio in the Woods’ reputation as a destination for emerging and established writers of all genres and backgrounds\, expands artist-in-residency programs\, adds private retreat space\, and furthers community outreach. The 500 square foot Cabin includes a private workspace with views of the Woods\, separate sleeping quarters and a dogtrot-style porch. Designed by John Anderson of unabridged Architecture\, the building slips quietly into the Woods and is simple\, yet elegant in its relationship to the environment and the existing buildings on site. The Cabin is energy efficient and hurricane resistant. \nThe first writer to benefit from this new space will be local author Ladee Hubbard.  Hubbard’s first novel\, The Talented Ribkins\, received the Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence and the Hurston-Wright Legacy Award for Debut Fiction. During her residency\, Hubbard will be revising a prequel to her debut novel. Hubbard is the second Gulf South Writer in the Woods\, a program of A Studio in the Woods and the New Orleans Center for the Gulf South\, designed to support the creative work\, scholarship and community engagement of writers examining the Gulf South region. \nThe event is free but please RSVP here.
