SUMMARY:Rising Residency Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an online information session about Rising: Climate in Crisis Residencies. Staff will give an overview of the application process and residency experience and then field questions from attendees. \nRising: Climate in Crisis Residencies at A Studio in the Woods invite artists to be agents of change in guiding our collective understanding\, response\, and vision as we shape our shared future. \nArtists play a vital role in facing the climate crisis. We encourage artists to guide our collective response to this challenging issue while bringing wisdom\, integrity\, optimism and even humor to intentional projects seeking transformation for our species and our planet. Southeast Louisiana’s land and inhabitants are continually challenged by the effects of environmental degradation. As sea levels and temperatures rise\, our landscape acts as a microcosm of the global environment. We look for ways to reimagine our interactions with our shifting urban and natural ecosystems. Rising Residencies provide artists with time\, space\, funding\, and staff support to foster critical thinking in the creation of new works – igniting our imaginations while illuminating our challenges and inspiring solutions. \nWe are open to artists of all disciplines who have demonstrated an established dialogue with environmental and cultural issues. We ask artists to describe in detail how our unique region will affect their work\, propose a public component to their residency\, and suggest ways how they will engage with the local community. Details and application here. \nRegister for Rising Info Session

SUMMARY:Artist Salon with Niki Franco
DESCRIPTION:Join us to meet and learn more about current Rising Resident Niki Franco. Niki will give short a presentation on her work followed by a light dinner and refreshments. Registration required below. \nNiki Franco is a Caribbean abolitionist community organizer\, writer\, and facilitator of spaces for collective study. Seeking to disrupt the institutionalized bureaucratic frameworks of academia and transactional ways in which relationships exist under capitalism\, her work experiments with truth-telling\, radical history and thought\, and revolutionary imagination. She also curates educational and cultural programming that navigates the current urgency on global solidarity\, environmental and ancestral preservation\, and strategies on building emotional and intellectual capacities to dismantle systems of oppression that inform and deform our current lives. She is the host of “Getting to the Root of It with Venus Roots\,” a podcast that leans into conversations with artists\, theorists\, and organizers. \nNiki’s residency project will function as the seeds for a short video educational/creative resource for community organizers\, activists\, researchers\, artists\, and educators available to the public. “Constellations Illuminating the Swamp” will have audio\, visual\, conversational\, and written components to it. The short video will be about 5 minutes and will be shot in both digital and camcorder footage\, featuring emblematic visuals that represent communities of New Orleans\, as well as making connections to the environments in other parts of the US South and Caribbean. She will record poetic excerpts\, interview excerpts\, as well as informational-educational voiceovers. This project will reject binary interpretations of climate change and will center the resistance against disaster capitalism and climate crisis in places like New Orleans\, Miami\, and Puerto Rico\, for example. It will be available for the public through YouTube\, videoshare\, and social media. \nThis program is supported by WWNO 89.9FM  \nRegister here for Artist Salon with Niki Franco

SUMMARY:FishSTOCK!
DESCRIPTION:Join us and artist Brandon Ballengée in Plaquemines Parish\, on March 25\, for a community celebration of art\, adaptation\, and fishes! \nFishes are by far the most successful group of vertebrates (animals with backbones) to ever occupy Earth. Fish are marvels of adaptation and resilience\, occupying almost all bodies of water on our planet\, and scientists have described over 34\,000 species with new species being found all the time! However\, overfishing\, oil spills\, and changes to habitats and climate have caused many species to decline. The Gulf of Mexico is home to 77 endemic fishes found nowhere else in the world\, and many of these have not been reported in recent decades. \nThis event is part of Searching for the Ghosts of the Gulf\, a collaborative project with the Plaquemines Parish Government supported by an Our Town grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. \nFEATURING: \nSearching for the Ghosts of the Gulf\nHands-on art & science activities\nTour of the world’s largest fish collection\nFishy foods from Bad Wolf\, Woodlands Plantation\, and more \nMUSIC SCHEDULE:11:30am-12:30pm – Sidiki Conde & Wowo Souakoli with Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes and Peter Carter\n1:00-2:00pm – Aaron Foret and the Swamp Pop Band\n2:30-3:15pm –  Valparaiso Men’s Chorus \nFOOD: \nBad Wolf\nKenny’s Cajun & Creole Cuisine\nWoodlands Plantation\nKona Ice\nChargrilled oysters on-site!! \nBAR:\n \nBar will be cash only. DESCRIPTION:Listen to Dr. Maupin’s interview about Inspiring Health Justice on Spotify or MixCloud. \nThis year’s Inspiring Health Justice Residencies in collaboration with the Dillard Minority Health and Health Equity Research Center will culminate on April 13\, 2023 at 5pm with an art opening and performance at Dillard University. Restoring Humanity: The Fight for Reproductive Justice in a Post-Roe World will showcase the work of three Dillard University students-in-residence; Tia Green\, Olivia Johnson\, and Gabriel Prewitt; who have been meeting all year with Dr. Robert Maupin (Professor of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the LSU Health Sciences Center and Associate Dean of Diversity & Community Engagement) and Dillard faculty members John Barnes (Associate Professor of Visual Arts) and Ray Vrazel (Associate Professor of Theater). \nThe aim of Inspiring Health Justice is to bring the arts and public health together to address our region’s long-standing health disparities through creative\, cross-disciplinary mentorship focusing the energy and passion of Dillard art students towards fostering health equity. This year’s focus has been on reproductive health disparities and the intersecting challenges for everyone affected by the issue of reproductive health — particularly Black women — historically as well as now in a post-Roe v. Wade world. \nWHEN: April 13\, 2023 at 5:00pm\nWHERE: Samuel DuBois Cook Fine Arts and Communications Center\n2601 Gentilly Boulevard\, New Orleans\, LA 70122

SUMMARY:Sanctuary: Multi-channel video Installation by Nailah Jefferson & Laurie Sumiye
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Small Center 1725 Baronne St) next Monday\, May 8th from 5-7pm\, for a Pop-Up Video Installation by current Rising: Climate in Crisis residents Artists-in-Residence Nailah Jefferson and Laurie Sumiye’s.\n\nThis immersive\, work-in-progress video installation delves into memory and tides of “urban renewal” in communities of color in New Orleans and Honolulu. In the displacement of lives impacted by ocean-level rise\, “invaders” change the make-up of local neighborhoods. Invasive species\, such as the ubiquitous Cat’s Claw vine (Uncaria tomentosa) in New Orleans represent the creeping of both climate change and rampant gentrification. \nMany thanks to The Albert and Tina Small Center for Collaborative Design for hosting! \nWhere: The Albert and Tina Small Center for Collaborative Design\, 1725 Baronne Street\nWhen: May 8-26\, visit (M-F\, 9am-5pm) by appointment jcotto@tulane.edu\nReception with the artists: May 8th\, 5-7pm

Registration is required below. \nDuring their residency\, Quintron and Miss Pussycat will create a live puppet show about extreme weather events\, utilizing a “Wildlife Organ” built and installed by Quintron at A Studio in the Woods. The Wildlife Organ is envisioned as a musical instrument using specially-housed microphones to intimately capture and process the broad spectrum of natural sounds on site\, routing each distinct sound back to a playable\, musical keyboard. \nMiss Pussycat began her career in art and puppetry as a child in the Southern Baptist Church of Antlers\, Oklahoma as part of the Christian Puppet Youth Ministry. She later moved to New Orleans and started a secret nightclub in her house called Pussycat Caverns\, which hosted bands and all types of performances in a unique and lively atmosphere. Today\, and for over 20 years\, she is busy presenting live puppet shows in rock clubs\, libraries\, and secret clubhouses all around the world\, and singing and playing maracas with Quintron. Her puppets and their worlds often become the genesis for other art projects\, such as ceramic statues\, paintings\, videos\, and electronic soundtracks. \nQuintron has been inventing electronic gadgets and creating genre-defying noise\, soundscape\, and house-rocking dance music in New Orleans for over 20 years\, much of it in collaboration with artist/puppeteer Panacea Theriac aka “Miss Pussycat”. In 1999\, Quintron helped to foster a DIY analog synth revival with a patented instrument called the DRUM BUDDY\, a light-activated analog drum machine that creates murky\, low-fidelity\, rhythmic patterns. These experiments eventually led to Quintron’s focus on a weather-controlled drone synthesizer called Weather Warlock and a website devoted to streaming its music called Weather For The Blind. \nThis program is supported by WWNO 89.9FM \nPhoto credit: Caitlyn Ridenour \n<a href=”https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/TMqgdX2sCQdwtDZAggsAhA”>Register here for Artist Salon with Quintron & Miss Pussycat</a><br />

SUMMARY:DISH: Artist Salon with Laura Tanner
DESCRIPTION:Join us to meet and learn more about current Rising Resident Laura Tanner. She will give a short presentation on her work followed by a community potluck dinner accompanied by stories and memories. Registration is required below. \nLaura Tanner’s creative works act as sites of inquiry into the revisionist histories that reinforce systems of inequity. Spanning drawing\, installation\, and social practice\, she works with historical institutions and local communities to collect documented and oral histories that shed light on the extraordinary contradictions between the perceived and experienced narratives in America. \nDish is an ongoing project that studies regional foodways (i.e.\, the eating habits and culinary practices that guide the production and consumption of food) across the country to discover deep connections between diverse communities. In addition to creating drawings\, Laura is collecting recipes and personal narratives about food traditions to be published in a series of printed catalogs as well as in an online archive. Please consider contributing to this effort by bringing a written recipe or food story with your dish to the potluck dinner. The recipe could be one that has been handed down through the family for generations\, shared with you by a friend\, or developed on your own. The only requirement is that the recipe somehow evokes your relationship to Louisiana. If you decide to share a story\, please consider one (or more) of the following prompts: \n\nWhat is your relationship to Louisiana’s landscape? How has it changed throughout your life?\nDescribe your life and/ or family history in Louisiana?\nWhat foods did you grow up with?\nWhat is Louisiana food? How has it changed?\nTell a story about a recipe (it’s origins\, who made it for you\, etc.)\nWho sits at your table?\n\nThe printed catalog will take the form of a community/ Junior League cookbook\, acknowledging the activist history of informal cookbooks as the sustenance of change in America. If you choose to contribute\, you will receive a copy of the catalog with your recipe/ story included. \nThank you in advance for your assistance\, and Laura looks forward to meeting you all at the dinner!\nCheers! \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Scent Walk with Manon Bellet
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Scent Walk in the forest with visual and olfactory artist Manon Bellet on Friday\, December 8th\, 10am – 11:30am. Participants will walk in the woods and along the banks of the Mississippi\, focusing explicitly on smells while becoming aware of the smell of the surrounding landscape and paying attention to unexpected and curious smells while recognizing some familiar. The event is free\, but registration is required below!  \nOlfaction is one of the most direct and archaic senses that does not obey one’s will but is directly linked to emotions and evokes memories and associations that seem very far from rational logic. It is a sense that appeals to our imagination.  \nBefore coming to the Woods\nStart paying closer attention to smells in your own environment. What does your home\, your neighborhood\, your work smell like? Could you tell them apart by smell alone?\nWhat to expect\n\nBe alert for curious and unexpected smells\, but also for episode smells specific to a particular area\, flowers\, plants\, water… let’s say background smells that are less intense but suggest an olfactory context.\nWalk slowly and note at least four distinct smells. Write them down\, noting the location\, the smell’s intensity and duration\, and your reaction and thoughts.\nTry scent hunting\, such as crushing leaves or actively sniffing a wall or other object\, and write down four more.\nCollect four final odors using either of the methods described and discuss your results with other olfactory hikers; if appropriate\, choose an odor that summarizes the area.\n\n\nPlease refrain from wearing strong perfumes or other scents so that you may enter the experience with a clean slate.\nRegister here for Scent walk with Manon Bellet

SUMMARY:Artist Salon with Ashley Teamer
DESCRIPTION:Join us to meet and learn more about Rising Residents Ashley Teamer. She will give a short presentation on her work followed by a light dinner and refreshments on Wednesday\, January 10th\, 6:30pm – 9:00-pm. Registration is required below. \nTeamer’s collages explore the relationships between the body\, nature\, space\, and time. She uses painting\, sculpture\, photography\, and sound to creatively intervene with indoor and outdoor architecture revealing the malleability of our built environment. Through layering images\, Teamer charts invented landscapes where dialogues between divergent moments and relationships are bridged. \nShe is working on a project called A World Without Levees\, which is an exhibition of large-scale collages that combine archival imagery with present-day photographs to show what New Orleans would look like if levees were transformed into structures that allowed us to live more harmoniously with water. \nDuring her residency\, her goal is to photograph every major levee\, canal\, and water management structure in the city\, learn more about the history of the levee system through archival research\, discuss her work in progress with friends\, family\, artists\, scientists\, and the wider A Studio in the Woods network. \nThis program is supported by WWNO 89.9FM \nRegister here for Artist Salon with Ashley Teamer
