SUMMARY:DISH: Artist Salon with Laura Tanner
DESCRIPTION:Join us to meet and learn more about current Rising Resident Laura Tanner. She will give a short presentation on her work followed by a community potluck dinner accompanied by stories and memories. Registration is required below. \nLaura Tanner’s creative works act as sites of inquiry into the revisionist histories that reinforce systems of inequity. Spanning drawing\, installation\, and social practice\, she works with historical institutions and local communities to collect documented and oral histories that shed light on the extraordinary contradictions between the perceived and experienced narratives in America. \nDish is an ongoing project that studies regional foodways (i.e.\, the eating habits and culinary practices that guide the production and consumption of food) across the country to discover deep connections between diverse communities. In addition to creating drawings\, Laura is collecting recipes and personal narratives about food traditions to be published in a series of printed catalogs as well as in an online archive. Please consider contributing to this effort by bringing a written recipe or food story with your dish to the potluck dinner. The recipe could be one that has been handed down through the family for generations\, shared with you by a friend\, or developed on your own. The only requirement is that the recipe somehow evokes your relationship to Louisiana. If you decide to share a story\, please consider one (or more) of the following prompts: \n\nWhat is your relationship to Louisiana’s landscape? How has it changed throughout your life?\nDescribe your life and/ or family history in Louisiana?\nWhat foods did you grow up with?\nWhat is Louisiana food? How has it changed?\nTell a story about a recipe (it’s origins\, who made it for you\, etc.)\nWho sits at your table?\n\nThe printed catalog will take the form of a community/ Junior League cookbook\, acknowledging the activist history of informal cookbooks as the sustenance of change in America. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Scent Walk in the forest with visual and olfactory artist Manon Bellet on Friday\, December 8th\, 10am – 11:30am. Participants will walk in the woods and along the banks of the Mississippi\, focusing explicitly on smells while becoming aware of the smell of the surrounding landscape and paying attention to unexpected and curious smells while recognizing some familiar. The event is free\, but registration is required below!  \nOlfaction is one of the most direct and archaic senses that does not obey one’s will but is directly linked to emotions and evokes memories and associations that seem very far from rational logic. It is a sense that appeals to our imagination.  \nBefore coming to the Woods\nStart paying closer attention to smells in your own environment. What does your home\, your neighborhood\, your work smell like? Could you tell them apart by smell alone?\nWhat to expect\n\nBe alert for curious and unexpected smells\, but also for episode smells specific to a particular area\, flowers\, plants\, water… let’s say background smells that are less intense but suggest an olfactory context.\nWalk slowly and note at least four distinct smells. Write them down\, noting the location\, the smell’s intensity and duration\, and your reaction and thoughts.\nTry scent hunting\, such as crushing leaves or actively sniffing a wall or other object\, and write down four more.\nCollect four final odors using either of the methods described and discuss your results with other olfactory hikers; if appropriate\, choose an odor that summarizes the area.\n\n\nPlease refrain from wearing strong perfumes or other scents so that you may enter the experience with a clean slate.\nRegister here for Scent walk with Manon Bellet

She will give a short presentation on her work followed by a light dinner and refreshments on Wednesday\, January 10th\, 6:30pm – 9:00-pm. Registration is required below. \nTeamer’s collages explore the relationships between the body\, nature\, space\, and time. She uses painting\, sculpture\, photography\, and sound to creatively intervene with indoor and outdoor architecture revealing the malleability of our built environment. SUMMARY:Walking in Wild Spaces with Tammy Greer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reflective walk with Director of the Southern Miss Center for American Indian Research and Studies Tammy Greer on Friday\, April 12th\, 10am-12pm. In this walk\, we will reflect on how creating and tending wild spaces\, co-creating with other forest beings\, and celebrating diverse and wild landscapes wherever we see them – in our yards and on our campuses\, in our board rooms and in our families\, in our forests and in ourselves – ensures their survival just as they ensure ours.  The event is free\, but registration is required below!  \nOur Southeastern Native ancestors lived in communities near waterways\, separated from one another by forested areas that were tended wild spaces – burned to manage underbrush\, reduce tick\, flea\, and other insect infestations\, promote growth in our fire-adapted long-leaf pine trees and enable others of the standing ones\, like oaks\, to have a competitive advantage.  These tended wild forests provided food and drink\, shelter and defense\, medicine and clothing sovereignty to our ancestors\, just as she provides\, as well\, for all the needs of other forest dwellers. \nTammy Greer\, Ph.D. (United Houma Nation) is a faculty member in the School of Psychology and Director of the Southern Miss Center for American Indian Research and Studies. She is faculty advisor to the Golden Eagles Intertribal Society\, a Native focused student group who works with the Center to host a yearly powwow\, Native Ways School Days and other Native-focused events on campus. In 2005\, Dr. Greer\, along with other tribal folks and Southern Miss faculty\, built a 1000 square foot native plant tended wild garden on the Southern Miss Campus. \nShe recently completed a Library of Congress Grant titled\, “And We Are Still Here: Indigenous Culture Bearers of the United Houma Nation” with a goal of making Houma material culture visible in a national venue so that Houma youth\, for seven generations\, can see and hear their elders speak to Houma experiences and culture. She\, along with an intertribal group\, is working with Prospect New Orleans bring back our mound-building culture and is currently working to build an earthen mound on the Lafitte Greenway in New Orleans. Dr. Greer is trained as a statistician and works with Mississippi INBRE to train Native students to research health issues in our Southeastern tribes. She is Co-PI on an NIH grant titled “Okla Achokma” (Healthy People) with a goal of integrating spiritual and socio-emotional components that are rooted in culture into typical healthy ways interventions to make those interventions more holistic. \nThis program is funded by The New Orleans Town Gardeners. \nRegister here for Walking in wild spaces w/ Tammy Greer

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon with Studio’s Ecologist David Baker on Friday\, May 31st\, from 3pm-6pm. David will discuss his journey of caring for the woods and his twenty-year knowledge of the bottomland\, followed by a delicious barbecue at Tulane River and Coastal Center. The event is free\, but registration is required below! \nFor twenty years\, David has been removing Chinese Privet (Ligustrium sinense) and Chinese Tallow ( Triadica sebifera) to restore the Bottomland Hardwood Forest at A Studio in The Woods. From 2004 to 2024\, approximately 25\,000 shrubs were removed from the 7.66 acres of forest. \nSimultaneously\, 32 (10X10-meter) research plots were installed in 2004 to monitor the rate of invasive species removal and observe the rate of change over time. Since 2004\, A Studio in The Woods has been impacted by eight hurricanes\, two of them extremely destructive. \nFollowing Hurricane Zeta in October 2020\, (50X50-meter) plots were installed to begin monitoring forest changes at a much larger scale. As a movement architect\, educator\, and curator working with and through various interdisciplinary forms of dance\, drawing\, film\, photography\, and sound\, cyan’s creative work mobilizes embodied memory and ecological play into a worldmaking practice. Performance exhibitions/installations\, practices\, and organizing include Common Healing\, T.Lang Dance\, Liberated Planet Studio\, The Black School\, Los Angeles Dance Festival\, Ritual Knowledge\, Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans\, Eleanor D. Wilson Museum Virginia\, Radical XChange\, Saint Heron\, BlackGirlGeniusWeek/SOLHOT\, No)one. Art House LA\, and Dancing Grounds. Cyan cian received her BFA/BA in Dance with a concentration in social justice\, gender women’s studies from Hollins University (2018) and Masters of Fine Arts in Choreography at Roehampton University\, London\, U.K (2021). \nWhile in residency\, Paris will keep working on her performance called “modjeskamodjeskamodjeska”. It is a multisite durational multidisciplinary performance installation investigating the embodied activation of prayer\, calling attention to the erosion of our coastlines due to rising sea levels and Hurricanes. In this installation\, she honors the restorative practice of the oyster body as a tool for ancestral protection of land and memory. SUMMARY:Artist Salon with Sunni Patterson & Aurora Levins Morales
DESCRIPTION:Join us to meet and learn more about Self as Universe residents\, Sunni Patterson & Aurora Levins Morales. They will give  short presentations on their work which will be followed by a light dinner and refreshments on Wednesday\, October 23rd\, 6:30pm – 9:00-pm. \nNew Orleans native and visionary Sunni Patterson deliberately uses art\, poetry\, and praise (Ancestral veneration) to encourage dialogue\, connectivity\, spiritual awareness\, and healing. She is an internationally acclaimed Poet\, Performer\, Workshop Facilitator\, Certified Spiritual Life Coach/Consultant\, and an Initiated Priestess and Minister. She will be returning to the Woods as a Self as Universe Resident. \nCuir\, feminist\, disabled and chronically ill Boricua-Ashkenazi (Puerto Rican Jewish) poet\, essayist and visual artist\, Aurora Levins Morales\, is a movement elder and sixth generation radical. The author of nine books\, her writing is widely taught and anthologized. She lives in Maricao\, Puerto Rico where she stewards 34 acres of subtropical rainforest\, gardens and writes\n*Currently\, we have implemented a temporary ban of scented products and ask that you please refrain from wearing any personal perfumes and products that are scented. Products that we are temporarily restricting the use of are things that have a chemical or strong scent. If you plan on using bug spray\, please consider using the natural sprays we will provide. SUMMARY:Volunteer Day in the Woods
DESCRIPTION:Join us to get your hands dirty in support of our lush bottomland forest on Friday\, October 25 from 9am-12pm! \nVolunteers will assist our Ecologist and Environmental Curator\, David Baker\, in some early FORESTival plant permitter clean up focusing on thinning overgrown vegetation and vines for the promotion of young Hardwood trees. He’ll also guide volunteers in the discussion of the Forest\, how native blackberries have changed the landscape since the Chinese Privet removal and the impact of Hurricane Francine. \nClick here to complete the required registration form. \nParking will be on Patterson Rd. outside of A Studio in the Woods campus at visitor’s own risk. Please wear enclosed shoes\, pants and gloves (if you have a favorite pair of loopers or garden shears\, feel free to bring them). No Pets allowed. \n.
