SUMMARY:Self As Universe Residencies Info Session 2024-25
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an online information session about Self As Universe: Mending Our Collective Ecosystem Residencies. Staff will give an overview of the application process and residency experience and then field questions from attendees. Register below.  \nSelf as Universe: Mending Our Collective Ecosystem Residencies at A Studio in the Woods invite artists to explore the connections within our collective ecosystems and use the power of imagination to heal the wounds in the relationship between our bodies and our communities. Southeast Louisiana’s land and inhabitants are continually scarred by the effects of environmental degradation. These injuries – the historical to the present – affect our bodies\, families\, communities\, and cultures\, as well as the land and its other creatures. We encourage artists to guide our collective response as caretakers and caregivers to our universe while bringing wisdom\, integrity\, optimism\, and even humor to intentional and timely projects seeking transformation for our species and planet. Details and application here. \nPhoto credit: Sunni Patterson by Alina Allen \nRegister for Self as Universe Info Session

SUMMARY:Walking in Wild Spaces with Tammy Greer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reflective walk with Director of the Southern Miss Center for American Indian Research and Studies Tammy Greer on Friday\, April 12th\, 10am-12pm. In this walk\, we will reflect on how creating and tending wild spaces\, co-creating with other forest beings\, and celebrating diverse and wild landscapes wherever we see them – in our yards and on our campuses\, in our board rooms and in our families\, in our forests and in ourselves – ensures their survival just as they ensure ours.  The event is free\, but registration is required below!  \nOur Southeastern Native ancestors lived in communities near waterways\, separated from one another by forested areas that were tended wild spaces – burned to manage underbrush\, reduce tick\, flea\, and other insect infestations\, promote growth in our fire-adapted long-leaf pine trees and enable others of the standing ones\, like oaks\, to have a competitive advantage.  These tended wild forests provided food and drink\, shelter and defense\, medicine and clothing sovereignty to our ancestors\, just as she provides\, as well\, for all the needs of other forest dwellers. \nTammy Greer\, Ph.D. (United Houma Nation) is a faculty member in the School of Psychology and Director of the Southern Miss Center for American Indian Research and Studies. She is faculty advisor to the Golden Eagles Intertribal Society\, a Native focused student group who works with the Center to host a yearly powwow\, Native Ways School Days and other Native-focused events on campus. In 2005\, Dr. Greer\, along with other tribal folks and Southern Miss faculty\, built a 1000 square foot native plant tended wild garden on the Southern Miss Campus. \nShe recently completed a Library of Congress Grant titled\, “And We Are Still Here: Indigenous Culture Bearers of the United Houma Nation” with a goal of making Houma material culture visible in a national venue so that Houma youth\, for seven generations\, can see and hear their elders speak to Houma experiences and culture. She\, along with an intertribal group\, is working with Prospect New Orleans bring back our mound-building culture and is currently working to build an earthen mound on the Lafitte Greenway in New Orleans. Dr. Greer is trained as a statistician and works with Mississippi INBRE to train Native students to research health issues in our Southeastern tribes. She is Co-PI on an NIH grant titled “Okla Achokma” (Healthy People) with a goal of integrating spiritual and socio-emotional components that are rooted in culture into typical healthy ways interventions to make those interventions more holistic. \nThis program is funded by The New Orleans Town Gardeners. \nRegister here for Walking in wild spaces w/ Tammy Greer

SUMMARY:Dish with Laura Tanner at the Keller Library
DESCRIPTION:Drop in at the Keller Library on Tuesday\, May 21\, 5-6:30pm to contribute to Rising Resident Laura Tanner’s project\, Dish\, an ongoing project that studies regional foodways (i.e.\, the eating habits and culinary practices that guide the production and consumption of food) across the country to discover deep connections between diverse communities. \nTuesday\, May 21\, 5-6:30pm \nRosa F. Keller Library \n4300 S. Broad Street\, New Orleans\nNote this is a drop in event\, so no need to stay the whole time. Email info@astudiointhewoods.org with any questions. \n\nIn addition to creating drawings\, Laura is collecting recipes and personal narratives about food traditions to be published in a series of printed catalogs as well as in an online archive. Please consider contributing to this effort by bringing a written recipe or food story to share in a listening both. The recipe could be one that has been handed down through the family for generations\, shared with you by a friend\, or developed on your own. The only requirement is that the recipe somehow evokes your relationship to Louisiana. If you decide to share a story\, please consider one (or more) of the following prompts:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is your relationship to Louisiana’s landscape? How has it changed throughout your life?\nDescribe your life and/ or family history in Louisiana?\nWhat foods did you grow up with?\nWhat is Louisiana food? How has it changed?\nTell a story about a recipe (it’s origins\, who made it for you\, etc.)\nWho sits at your table?\n\nThe printed catalog will take the form of a community/ Junior League cookbook\, acknowledging the activist history of informal cookbooks as the sustenance of change in America. If you choose to contribute\, you will receive a copy of the catalog.

SUMMARY:Bark\, Branches\, and Barbecue: Celebrating 20 years of David Baker's research
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon with Studio’s Ecologist David Baker on Friday\, May 31st\, from 3pm-6pm. David will discuss his journey of caring for the woods and his twenty-year knowledge of the bottomland\, followed by a delicious barbecue at Tulane River and Coastal Center. The event is free\, but registration is required below! \nFor twenty years\, David has been removing Chinese Privet (Ligustrium sinense) and Chinese Tallow ( Triadica sebifera) to restore the Bottomland Hardwood Forest at A Studio in The Woods. From 2004 to 2024\, approximately 25\,000 shrubs were removed from the 7.66 acres of forest. \nSimultaneously\, 32 (10X10-meter) research plots were installed in 2004 to monitor the rate of invasive species removal and observe the rate of change over time. Since 2004\, A Studio in The Woods has been impacted by eight hurricanes\, two of them extremely destructive. \nFollowing Hurricane Zeta in October 2020\, (50X50-meter) plots were installed to begin monitoring forest changes at a much larger scale. The smaller plots were observed 20 years in a row\, and the larger plots were surveyed for 4 years post-hurricane. \nDavid will share data and stories from 20 years of deep observation of 1400 trees at A Studio in the Woods. \n<a href=”https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/2eazmgy5uPy74Ot__VgPCg”>Register here for Grilling and Talking with David Baker</a><br />

SUMMARY:Artist Salon with Niamh Rita & Justice Singleton and Issy Manley
DESCRIPTION:Join us to meet and learn more about Self as Universe: Mending Our Collective Ecosystem residents\, Niamh Rita & Justice Singleton and Issy Manley as they give us a glimpse into the work they’ll be doing during their residency followed by a light dinner and refreshments on Tuesday\, December 3rd\, 6:30pm – 9:00-pm. \nDuring their residency at Studio in the Woods\, Niamh Rita & Justice Singleton will design and facilitate an experimental writers’ room tailored for a diverse group of transgender storytellers and artists from their local New Orleans community. In this writing room\, they have chosen to focus on writing a screenplay because film is one of the most far-reaching mediums for sharing stories in today’s world. Producing a screenplay will lay the foundation for a future film production that will create artistic opportunities in our community. This collaborative writing project will provide a container and platform for participants to create stories that address the wounds in our collective ecosystems\, promote healing of those wounds\, and imagine the future we want to live in. \nNiamh Rita (they/them) is a transmasc interdisciplinary artist and amateur folklorist living in New Orleans. Using the mediums of protest art\, comics\, collective creative projects and tattoo art\, they work to build community and facilitate healing transformation through their art practice. Justice Singleton (he/him) is a black transmasculine educator\, screenwriter\, director\, actor\, poet\, stand-up comedian and drag burlesque artist who lives in New Orleans. Justice facilitates a writer’s program that enlists creators to build community\, inspires radical education and dismantles systemic storytelling. \nIssy’s residency project is an illustrated\, age-appropriate guide on the climate and ecological seasonal changes of sub-tropical Southeast Louisiana for preschool through early elementary-aged children. The final product might take shape as a 12-page picture book\, open-ended field workbook\, poster\, fold-out/ pop-up zine\, or a comic that would be printed and distributed for free to local educators/ programs to share with their students (as well as being offered free digitally to a wider audience). As an educator Issy has found few to no resources on our local climate and seasons for young children\, and feels that it is important that children get to learn about the climate\, weather and how eco-systems are shaped by both in the places that they live. \nIssy Manley (she/her) is a cartoonist and educator living in New Orleans. Issy makes non-fiction comics about labor\, climate crisis and capitalism. Her essay comics have been published in The Guardian\, The Nib Magazine\, The Washington Post and Narratively\, among others. Her collection of non-fiction comics about work and unemployment during the pandemic – “No One Wants to Work Anymore” – was published by Antenna Press in 2023. She is the winner of Antenna’s 2021 Open Call\, a MICE mini-grant\, and was shortlisted for the 2022 Cartoonist Studio Prize. Issy has exhibited at Shortrun\, CAKE and MICE comics festivals\, and holds an MFA from The Center for Cartoon Studies. \nClick here to RSVP. Registration is required.

SUMMARY:Artist Salon with Hali Dardar
DESCRIPTION:We’re kicking off 2025 with an Artist Salon featuring Self as Universe: Mending Our Collective Ecosystem residents\, Hali Dardar as she gives us a glimpse into the work she’ll be doing during their residency followed by a light dinner and refreshments on Thursday\, January 16 at 6:30pm.  \nHali Dardar is an enrolled member of the United Houma Nation\, and co-founder of the Houma Language Project and Bvlbancha Public Access. Her works explore interaction design\, new media art\, and community process. Past interaction design projects include the 2021 and 2023 Indigenous Gulf Streams\, Ripple Effect’s Water Glossaries\, and both the Unrecognized Stories and Language Keeper interview series. \nDardar’s residency project\, Imagining Leveys explores how Gulf South communities can maintain sovereignty and security of their futures while collaborating with external partners to create stories. Dardar’s residency will continue to explore an existing stream of work which designs a conceptual interaction for equitable story exchange by approaching the interview process as a market transaction rather than a relational exchange. Exploring and expanding this conceptual interaction around the rematriation of content provides a space for a larger discussion of ownership as it pertains to the vast intangible corpus of lived experiential knowledge. The project aims to open this larger dialogue through a public event along with small group idea collage sessions with digital and film story tellers\, archive professionals\, and legal counsel. \nClick here to RSVP. Registration is required. \n  \nBy attending this event\, you understand that you may appear in marketing materials and herby consent to the reproduction and use of any image\, video or audio recording for any promotional purposes you may appear in.
