SUMMARY:AnthropoSonic: Live Performance Lab with Lisa E. Harris
DESCRIPTION:The New Orleans Center for the Gulf South (NOCGS) continues its exploration of the Anthropocene this year\, highlighting the interdependence of humans\, animals\, and the earth by presenting AnthropoSonic. Join us and NOCGS at Myra Clare Rogers Memorial Chapel at Tulane University on Thursday\, April 7 2022 at 6PM for AnthropoSonic: Live Performance Lab with Rising Resident Lisa E. Harris. \nLisa E. Harris is a classically trained vocalist\, interdisciplinary artist\, and filmmaker. She is a Rising: Climate in Crisis Resident and a 2021 NOCGS Monroe Fellow. She is currently working on a research/immersive environmental performance piece called “Onshore Trilling”: What To Do When the Earth Sings the Bruise; a performance cycle composition inspired by the life cycle of an oil and gas field. This performance approaches seismic graphs as graphic scores and processing seismic waves through a human voice database to create a song cycle to be performed onshore\, near or in proximity to productive offshore drilling sites in Norway\, Texas\, and the Gulf South. \nAnthropoSonic is a two-part series of workshops and performances with African-descended vocalists Lisa E. Harris and Michaela Harrison. The Anthropocene is a useful concept –– and proposed geological epoch –– recognizing the present era in which human-generated forces have altered the earth’s surface\, atmosphere\, and planetary patterns. Both Harris and Harrison are part of a growing ecosystem of research-based composers who engage with unexpected collaborators to investigate the impact of humans on other animals and the earth\, promote healing\, and explore our environmental futures. \nThis event is sponsored by the Skau Art and Music Fund and Newcomb Institute. \nRegister at gulfsouth@tulane.edu.

SUMMARY:Postponed - Writing Climate Futures with Desiree S. Evans
DESCRIPTION:The New Orleans Futurism Lab: Writing Climate Futures\nSaturday\, April 9\, 10am – 12pm on Zoom. Registration required below. \nJoin Gulf South Writer in the Woods Desiree S. Evans for Writing Climate Futures\, a collaborative world-building and creative writing workshop where participants will learn about speculative fiction specifically as it relates to climate change fiction. In Part 1 of the workshop\, participants will collectively imagine and build a future world together — we will envision New Orleans 200 years into the future\, with a specific focus on the city’s climate future. In Part 2 of the workshop\, we will have time to write individual futurist stories into this collaborative universe. We will then gather at the end to share\, interweaving our visions\, fears\, and hopes for the future into this collaborative act of speculative fiction-making. \nAs we struggle to define our changing city\, our relationship to the land and each other provides a foundation for community building and a chance to envision solutions to our greatest climate crises. This is the power of speculative fiction visioning\, allowing us to creatively come up with a world in which to explore important issues. Inspired by the Detroit Sci-Fi Generator\, this workshop is an opportunity to imagine alternative climate futures for our city. \nGulf South Writer in the Woods\, a program of A Studio in the Woods and the New Orleans Center for the Gulf South\, supports the creative work\, scholarship and community engagement of writers examining the Gulf South region.Register here for Climate Futures Writing Workshop with Desiree S. SUMMARY:Studio at the Broadside
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fundraiser and screening of Jason Berry’s film City of a Million Dreams\, featuring former Studio residents Dr. Michael White\, Monique Moss\, and Jarrell Hamilton. All proceeds from the event will support the programming of A Studio in the Woods. \nTuesday\, April 19\, 2022 \n6pm – 7:30pm – Celebrate to a soundtrack of former Studio residents and visit with the Studio community! We’ll send you a link to the playlist after the event so you can enjoy the sounds of the Studio anytime.\n7:30pm – 9pm – Screening of City of a Million Dreams \nTickets $45 – Includes popcorn and first drink. \nAdditional food and beverages available for purchase. Silent auction including Jazz Fest tickets\, a secondline umbrella by Sisterly Umbrellas\, a signed Jazz Fest poster and more! \n \nChildren are welcome to attend the event free of charge\, but be aware that the film addresses mature topics including gun violence.\nAbout the film: \n\nFamous the world over\, jazz funerals have origins shrouded in mystery. Filmed over twenty-two years\, City of a Million Dreams explores race relations at a tearing time in American society. Burial traditions train a lens on the unique and resilient culture of New Orleans. City of a Million Dreams draws from the 2018 book of the same title by Jason Berry. \nDeb Cotton\, an African American and observant Jew\, leaves “hard-hearted Hollywood” for New Orleans\, and becomes a chronicler of the parading clubs spawned by 19th century burial societies. Her zeal for the city grows as she becomes a blogger for Gambit Weekly\, adopting the handle “Big Red Cotton.” As Deb explores her adopted culture\, Dr. Michael White\, a prolific clarinetist and New Orleans native\, plays “the widow’s wail” on his clarinet\, a cry of lamentation in the funeral marches. White’s transcendent music also includes joyous peals for the soul’s cutting-loose\, which happens when the band leaves the cemetery\, followed by dancers in what New Orleanians call “the second line.” Risen in the ranks of brass bands\, White\, too\, is on a journey of self-discovery\, seeking clues about his ancestor who played at the dawn of jazz. White says of jazz funerals: “For someone dealing with American racism and trying to figure out your place in this life…you can be transformed into another world that really sets you free.” \n\n\nFunerals unfold as caravans of memory\, shaping White’s quest and Cotton’s epiphanies. New Orleans burial customs evolve as people of different tongues and colors reach the city\, surviving floods\, fires\, war\, political violence\, civil rights struggles\, and hurricanes. The film follows the French town’s evolution with a stunning recreation of African burial choreographies by enslaved people\, honoring ancestral memory on a field called Congo Square. The resistance drama of danced memory carries across time\, gathering force as as black men march as Mardi Gras Indians in one the film’s most powerful funeral sequences. As African dances merge with the funeral processions of European marching bands\, the fusion of the ring and the line gives shape to jazz music\, and an archetype of the city’s diverse society. \nWhen the documentary hits a violent turning point at a parade shooting\, Deb Cotton and Michael White are plunged into a search for the city’s soul.

SUMMARY:Fishes: Masters of Adaptation - Workshop and Tour of the Royal D. Suttkus Fish Collection
DESCRIPTION:Join artist and biologist Brandon Ballengée for an art-science workshop on Gulf fish species diversity\, natural history and specimen drawing! We will tour the Tulane University’s Royal D. Suttkus Fish Collection (the largest collection of preserved fishes on the planet!) in Belle Chasse followed by a drawing workshop on-site in one of the fish labs. \nFishes are by far the most successful group of vertebrates (animals with backbones) to ever occupy Earth. Fish are marvels of adaptation and resilience\, occupying almost all bodies of water on our planet\, and scientists have described over 34\,000 species with new species being found all the time! However\, overfishing\, oil spills\, changes to habitats and climate have caused many species to decline. The Gulf of Mexico is home to 77 endemic fishes\, found nowhere else in the world\, and many of these have not been reported in recent decades. \nThis event is part of Searching for the Ghosts of the Gulf\, a collaborative project with the Plaquemines Parish Government supported by an Our Town grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. \nRegister here for Workshop with Brandon Ballengée

SUMMARY:GiveNOLA Day Walk in the Woods with David Baker
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate GiveNOLA Day by joining us for a Walk in the Woods with Environmental Curator David Baker! \nMake a gift that will grow! This year GiveNOLA day donations will support our ongoing work of tending to the forest\, which itself provides so much inspiration and care to our residents. \nSince 2004\, our on-site Environmental Curator\, David Baker\, has cared for\, researched\, and nurtured the woods\, serving as an interpreter of the natural environment for residents and the community\, and anchoring all of our work within the bottomland hardwood forest. As the climate crisis intensifies\, hurricanes become more frequent\, and the forest endures\, we ground our work in the land itself\, looking to the woods as an example of how we can adapt to a changing world. This GiveNOLA Day\, we hope that you will join us in this exchange with the forest by making a donation to support our work or walking in the woods with David. \nRegister below and don’t forgot to support A Studio in the Woods this GiveNOLA Day. Early giving is now open. \nAll GiveNOLA day donations over $50 will be entered to win a weekend getaway in our new Writer’s Cabin this summer! Take a tour of this tranquil space here.\n \n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Artist Salon with Desiree S. Evans
DESCRIPTION:Join us and New Orleans Center for the Gulf South to meet and learn more about current Gulf South Writer in the Woods Desiree S. Evans!  Desiree will give a short presentation followed by a light dinner and refreshments outdoors. At A Studio in the Woods\, 13401 Patterson Rd. New Orleans 70131. Registration required below.  Proof of vaccination or negative PCR test within 72 hours required for those 5 and up. Directions here. \nAs the third Gulf South Writer in the Woods\, Desiree S. Evans will be completing work on a dystopian literary fantasy novel set hundreds of years into the future along what remains of the Gulf Coast. The novel tells the story of an African-American woman and her family surviving in a post-climate change world where most of Louisiana is under water. In this phantasmagorical new landscape\, monsters of myth and legend converge alongside stories of our past and dreams of our possible futures. As a work of speculative fiction and eco-fabulism\, the novel makes its home alongside the growing canon of literature exploring the effects of anthropogenic climate change. Desiree will also spend time during her residency editing her short-fiction collection — an interlinked series of stories steeped in the folklore\, mythology\, and history of the bayou communities of rural Louisiana. As a Louisiana native\, the Gulf South region plays an important role in Desiree’s writing. In taking readers into her speculative Southern landscapes\, she aims to showcase the rich heritage and cultural traditions of a place that is sometimes more water than land. SUMMARY:Artist Salon with Hye Sea
DESCRIPTION:Join us to meet and learn more about current Rising: Climate in Crisis Resident Hye Sea. Hye will give a short presentation on her work followed by a light dinner and refreshments. Registration required below. \nHye Sea is an artist\, alchemist\, and steward of the earth. Her residency project will focus on documenting the stories of those who are devoted to being stewards of the land and earth. She will create a solar-engraved collection of portraiture and collage to shine a light on Black\, melanated\, and/or Indigenous identified stewards. Her intention is to take viewers on a journey into the medicine each steward has discovered through their collaboration with the land and earth; their homage to the divine; their embrace of a multi-layered existence and what it looks like to trust in the wisdom found in nature. \nHer materials include reclaimed wood\, used paper from local libraries\, earth and mineral pigments and regenerative sources of paint aka solar rays. Hye Sea’s inclination to prioritize local\, up-cycled and ethically sourced materials stem from her connection to nature where waste is a nonexistent thing. The foundation of her artwork is rooted in a knowing—that we already have everything we need. And oftentimes\, our problems stem from an unwillingness to alchemize the resources and tools that are right in front of us. \nHye Sea’s solar engraving practice is how she pays tribute to the natural worlds and those that have long communicated through glyphs. Her intention is to remind us of our connection to the forces of nature available for connection & collaboration. Visit Hye Sea’s website to learn more. \nThis program is supported by WWNO 89.9FM \nRegister here for Artist Salon with Hye Sea

SUMMARY:Artist Salon with Simi Kang\, Nailah Jefferson\, and Laurie Sumiye
DESCRIPTION:Join us to meet and learn more about current Rising Resident Simi Kang and a collaborative project by Rising Residents Nailah Jefferson and Laurie Sumiye. They will each give short a presentation on their work followed by a light dinner and refreshments. Registration required below. \nSimi Kang is a mixed Sikh American community advocate\, educator\, artist\, and scholar. Their work centers Asian American collaborative resistance as a site for imagining environmentally and economically just futures in southeast Louisiana. Their project\, Mapping Shrimping Futures\, directly addresses the severity of multiple and layered climate crises in southeast Louisiana and asks its residents what futures they would most like to see. The project engages community-based organizations and Southeast Asian American fishing families to create audio and physical story maps. Through this\, the project aims to re-emplace stories and experiences that are kept out of official maps about climate change\, population density\, and the health of our water and land. \nWith nature as their guide\, New Orleans-born filmmaker Nailah Jefferson and Hawaii-born artist Laurie Sumiye\, from two different tourist-driven\, coastal economies grappling with climate-caused sea rise will explore the historical effects invasive species have on fragile native ecosystems and relate it to the growing threat of gentrification in their neighborhoods. They ask the question\, “Can equity be maintained when invasion occurs?” \nNailah Jefferson is a native New Orleans filmmaker intrigued and inspired by the enduring human spirit\, whose films span fiction and nonfiction. Her acclaimed work has been distributed domestically and internationally on the film festival circuit\, theatrically and televised. \nLaurie Sumiye is a conceptual artist & storyteller whose work about nature and species extinction plays with themes of reciprocity\, care and spirituality. Her cross-disciplinary practice spans drawing\, painting\, animation\, sculpture\, installation\, film and immersive media. \nThis program is supported by WWNO 89.9FM  \nRegister here for Artist Salon with Simi Kang\, Nailah Jefferson\, and Laurie Sumiye

SUMMARY:Artist Salon with Zeelie Brown and Rachel Lin Weaver
DESCRIPTION:Join us to meet and learn more about current Rising Residents Zeelie Brown and Rachel Lin Weaver. They will each give short a presentation on their work followed by a light dinner and refreshments. Registration required below. \nZeelie Brown’s first art museum was the pine woods in Alabama. They make Black&queer wilderness refuges called “soulscapes” to (re)imagine what nature might be. Zeelie is currently working with the MIT Department of Architecture\, NOMAS\, and Group Project to create sustainable human waste solutions in their native rural Alabama. While in residence\, Zeelie will work on Little Creole Gardens\, which aims to tend a revolutionary front of Black wilderness which rages against the tide of white greed threatening to drown our world. To that aim\, they will spend six weeks designing a creole liberation wild garden — via research in New Orleans’ wealth of archives of Gulf South visual and material culture\, providing a solid groundwork for future acts within a creole aesthetic of survival. \nRachel Lin Weaver is an artist whose work spans video\, installation\, sculpture\, and performance. Weaver’s creative interests relate directly to an upbringing in rural Alaska and West Virginia\, and their projects explore intersectional identity\, queer/trans embodiment\, memory\, and interdependence. While in residence\, Weaver will work on MOSQUITO DANCE. Created through partnerships with tropical medicine researchers\, entomologists\, and Native elders\, MOSQUITO DANCE is a two-part experimental short film and video/projection mapping installation. Looking closely at mosquitos as vectors and cultural symbols\, the project contends with disease history in New Orleans and the greater American South\, climate crisis-caused tropical disease spikes (which correlate to booms in mosquito population)\, and Louisiana American Indian community resilience in the face of climate crisis. \nThis program is supported by WWNO 89.9FM  \nRegister here for Artist Salon with Zeelie Brown and Rachel Lin Weaver

SUMMARY:Fishes: Masters of Adaptation – Workshop and Tour of the Royal D. Suttkus Fish Collection
DESCRIPTION:Join artist and biologist Brandon Ballengée for an art-science workshop on Gulf fish species diversity\, natural history\, and specimen drawing! We will tour Tulane University’s Royal D. Suttkus Fish Collection (the most extensive collection of preserved fishes on the planet!) in Belle Chasse\, followed by a drawing workshop on-site in one of the fish labs. \nFishes are the most successful vertebrates (animals with backbones) ever to occupy Earth. Fish are marvels of adaptation and resilience\, inhabiting almost all bodies of water on our planet\, and scientists have described over 34\,000 species\, with new species being found all the time! However\, overfishing\, oil spills\, and changes to habitats and climate have caused many species to decline. The Gulf of Mexico is home to 77 endemic fishes found nowhere else in the world\, and many of these have not been reported in recent decades. \nThis event is part of Searching for the Ghosts of the Gulf\, a collaborative project with the Plaquemines Parish Government supported by an Our Town grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. \nRegistration is required.  \nRegister here for Workshop with Brandon Ballengée

SUMMARY:Rising Residency Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an online information session about Rising: Climate in Crisis Residencies. Staff will give an overview of the application process and residency experience and then field questions from attendees. \nRising: Climate in Crisis Residencies at A Studio in the Woods invite artists to be agents of change in guiding our collective understanding\, response\, and vision as we shape our shared future. \nArtists play a vital role in facing the climate crisis. We encourage artists to guide our collective response to this challenging issue while bringing wisdom\, integrity\, optimism and even humor to intentional projects seeking transformation for our species and our planet. Southeast Louisiana’s land and inhabitants are continually challenged by the effects of environmental degradation. As sea levels and temperatures rise\, our landscape acts as a microcosm of the global environment. We look for ways to reimagine our interactions with our shifting urban and natural ecosystems. Rising Residencies provide artists with time\, space\, funding\, and staff support to foster critical thinking in the creation of new works – igniting our imaginations while illuminating our challenges and inspiring solutions. \nWe are open to artists of all disciplines who have demonstrated an established dialogue with environmental and cultural issues. We ask artists to describe in detail how our unique region will affect their work\, propose a public component to their residency\, and suggest ways how they will engage with the local community. Details and application here. \nRegister for Rising Info Session
